The circularity plan for the Balearic tourist industry requires hotel buildings to phase out thermal installations that run on fuel oil or diesel. Heat pumps are the perfect solution for tourist accommodations to replace thermal installations.
This law mandates compliance with this measure for all tourist accommodations in the Balearic Islands, 'unless duly accredited impossibility.'
When should fuel oil and diesel installations be replaced?
The replacement of thermal installations that run on fuel oil or diesel must be completed before May 1, 2027 for most tourist accommodations in the Balearic Islands. However, for newly constructed accommodations from 2019, 2020, or 2021, or facilities that have undergone renovations with changes to thermal installations during 2019, 2020, and 2021, the final deadline for implementation is May 1, 2028.
What law defines this obligation?
Law 3/2022, of June 15, on Urgent measures for the sustainability and circularity of tourism in the Balearic Islands, introduces significant changes to the current Law 8/2012, of July 19, on Tourism in the Balearic Islands, primarily in article 2, a new Title V in the tourism law, under the heading 'Circular Economy Measures.'
Specifically, Article 102 of Chapter III of Title V, about environmental measures and resource use efficiency, establishes that tourist accommodations in the Balearic Islands 'will phase out thermal installations that run on fuel oil or diesel and replace them with others that use energy sources with a reduced environmental impact, unless duly accredited impossibility.'
Heat pumps: the perfect solution to comply with the new legislation
Heat pumps are the perfect solution to replace thermal installations in the Balearic Islands, as they are 3 to 7 times more efficient than fossil fuel boilers. In addition, they offer the following advantages:
- Greater efficiency.
- Reduction of CO2 emissions.
- Reduction of energy consumption and costs.
- Lower maintenance expenses.
- Greater safety and cleanliness in installations.
- Increased durability of components.
Endesa offers climate control solutions
At Endesa, we offer services for businesses to install climate control solutions designed with the primary goal of optimising energy consumption and ensuring the right temperature, humidity, and air quality at all times, in accordance with the standards set by current regulations.
All this is particularly important if we consider that the climate control installation of a hotel building can account for between 30% and 50% of the facility's energy consumption, resulting in around 15% of operating costs for these types of buildings.
To achieve this, we focus our efforts from the project phase, where we seek the most suitable technical solution. To do so, we consider not only the use and location of the building, but also relevant aspects such as the characteristics of the thermal envelope, the occupancy curve over different periods, and even the spatial layout on the building's roof.
